Prioritise your safety with C M Chimney Sweep

Understanding the dangers and importance of having a chimney swept is crucial for every homeowner. Our safety tips are designed to keep you and your family safe.

Schedule annual professional cleanings and inspections

Ensure your chimneys are swept and inspected annually by a professional, particularly before the start of the heating season. Regular sweeping removes highly flammable creosote buildup, which is the primary cause of chimney fires. Wood-burning chimneys should ideally be cleaned quarterly when in heavy use, or at least annually.

Burn only dry, seasoned wood

Use seasoned hardwoods (e.g., oak or maple) that have been split, stored, and dried for at least 6–12 months. The moisture content should be 20% or less. Burning wet, green, or painted wood produces excessive smoke and buildup, creating a fire hazard and reducing efficiency. Never burn rubbish or cardboard.

Avoid burning improper fuel

Using the fireplace to get rid of Christmas wrapping paper, cardboard, or "treated" wood is a frequent mistake. Paper and cardboard burn too fast and can send floating embers up the chimney, potentially landing on your roof or sticking to creosote and igniting a chimney fire. Treated or painted wood also releases toxic chemicals and heavy metals into your home air.
